Coping with grief, loss and bereavement

Losing an important person in our lives can feel devastating and overwhelming. We all experience loss and grief differently, and there is no right or wrong way to grieve.

Your grief is very personal to you, and the way you may come to terms with it is also very personal to you.

Grief for some is a feeling they recover from quickly but for others it can go on for years, and things such as anniversaries, significant dates, or places you have visited/lived can trigger reminders of this loss.

Many people will experience a range of emotions:-

Loss – you may suddenly be feeling very alone.

Denial – you may not have accepted what has happened and still believe the person will come back into your life

Anger – how can they have left me, and left me to feel like this?

Shock – you may not have seen this coming and are trying to make sense of what has happened

Confusion – you may not know what to do or say, or what to feel, you may feel totally overwhelmed by what has happened and it may feel like life has been put on hold

Regret/Guilt – you may be thinking of things you wished you had said, and also perhaps things which you wish you had not said or which you wished you could take back.

You may also be experiencing some of the following symptoms:-

  • Sleep problems
  • Depression
  • Suicidal thoughts
  • Fear of what the future holds
  • An inability to focus on anything

Everyone’s experience of grief is very unique and so there is no single and simple solution which applies, across the board to everyone.
